Thomas Barth.

Thomas Barth was born in Vienna in 1965. His musical development was shaped by studies in Austria, Denmark, and New York, with early formative guidance from Dr. Karl Schnürl (piano, theory) and Mag. Friedrich Förstel (music education). He later expanded his musical perspective through master classes with Sir Niels Lan Doky (Jazz Summer School Brandbjerg, 1985), Herbie Hancock (Mozarteum Salzburg, 1987), and Joe Zawinul (Wiener Meisterkurse, 1992).

His studio and live collaborations include Beat4Feet, Stray Dog Music, Craig Graham, Ian Froman, John Hébert, Chris Minh Doky, Electric Diamond, and Brand Nubian, as well as a performance with Deodato at the Jazz Festival 2002 at the Vienna State Opera. He has released two albums under his name so far: Seven Worlds (2001), recorded in NYC and featuring Mike Stern, Craig Handy, Gerald Veasley, Michael Baker, and Evan Tate; and Beyond Black & White (2003), a solo piano double CD. His music has been used in films, such as in the documentary Who Is Afraid of Wilhelm Reich (2009), directed by Antonin Svoboda. Since 2014, he has been a member of Jazztrio.at (Johannes Strasser, b; and Wolfgang Wehner, dr), with the CDs Weihnachtsalbum (2015) and Sommeralbum (2016).

He is currently active in Vienna as a pianist and arranger, collaborating with vocalists Louie Austen and Loredana Iadicicco, as well as with The Sextet. Musicians he works with regularly include Thomas Zech, Peter Strutzenberger, Dušan Simović, Thomas Nothbauer, and Markus Pechmann.

Thomas Barth is both a musician and a licensed psychoanalyst. One outcome of this combination is his concept "Psychoanalysis and Music: Elements of the Soul", presented at the World Congress for Psychotherapy (WCP) in Vienna in July 2025. For Barth, music and psychoanalysis are complementary fields. Both are based on listening, emotional resonance, and creative exchange, as well as experiencing meaning beyond what can be expressed in words.

Seine Musik wurde in Filmen verwendet, etwa in dem Dokumentarfilm Wer hat Angst vor Wilhelm Reich (2009, Regie: Antonin Svoboda). Seit 2014 ist er Mitglied von Jazztrio.at (Johannes Strasser, b; Wolfgang Wehner, dr), mit den CDs Weihnachtsalbum (2015) und Sommeralbum (2016).

Derzeit ist er in Wien als Pianist und Arrangeur tätig, u.a. in den Bands von Louie Austen und Loredana Iadicicco sowie bei The Sextet. Musiker, mit denen er regelmäßig zusammenarbeitet, sind Thomas Zech, Peter Strutzenberger, Dušan Simović, Thomas Nothbauer und Markus Pechmann.

Thomas Barth ist sowohl Musiker als auch approbierter Psychoanalytiker. Ein Ergebnis dieser Kombination ist sein Konzept „Psychoanalysis and Music: Elements of the Soul“, das er im Juli 2025 beim World Congress for Psychotherapy (WCP) in Wien präsentierte. Für Barth sind Musik und Psychoanalyse komplementäre Gebiete. Beide gründen auf Zuhören, emotionaler Resonanz und kreativem Austausch sowie auf dem Erleben von Bedeutung jenseits dessen, was sich in Worten ausdrücken lässt.
